What is Chemistry?: The definition of Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.
How to help kids learn about chemistry:
- Teach Chemistry Concepts with a Chemistry Set: If structured science is your game, then Thames & Kosmos chemistry sets is the name! Try the C500, C1000, C2000, or C3000 chemistry sets, which each build upon chemistry concepts from set to set. You do not need to start at C500 as all chemistry experiments of previous sets are in the next set. (So, C1000 includes all C500 experiments, C2000 includes all C500 & C1000 experiments, and so on.) We experimented with other (cheaper) chemistry kits and their plastic parts did not hold up well at all, which we feel is critical when dealing with chemicals, so we only carry high-quality-worth-the-money Thames & Kosmos chemistry sets.
- Make Chemistry FUN with Chemistry "Lab Application" Kits: Children that are younger or have a more unstructured learning style may feel more "chemistry" with a lab kit that applies chemistry concepts in a really fun way! Think of these kits as "Chemistry Labs". Whether kids concoct perfumes, chocolates, fizzy stuff, soda pop, or are powering rockets, their lab experiences are building a knowledge base of chemistry for future structured learning in school. Our lab kits apply-chemistry-concepts-while-having-fun!
- Blend Science Concepts with Labs: Your child will truly benefit if you blend chemistry concepts with lab experiences. "Learn AND Apply" will have a greater impact than just "learning" or just "applying" chemistry. A blend of a chemistry set and a lab kit will solidify your child's understanding of chemistry better than doing *just* one or the other.
- Other Ideas to Make Chemistry Fun: Help them picture themself as a real scientist! Give your child a "lab coat" from an old, big, white shirt from someone in the family or a used clothing store. Decorate it with their name, prefixed by "Dr." on the back of the shirt or on the upper left pocket. Get them a pair of safety goggles and put their name on it. Extras can go a long way in making it fun!
