We think of math as two things - numbers and spatial skills. Developing number skills and spatial skills are EQUAL in importance. AND WE THINK MATH IS FUN! We want to help show kids that it is!
DEVELOPING NUMBER SKILLS: To be successful in math, our kids need to understand numbers, how they relate, and how to manipulate them. Kids start with simple skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They progress to negative & postive numbers, integers, fractions, multiples, factors, exponents, and square roots. They learn about prime numbers, Fibonacci, and Catalan numbers. And they continue to progress to even more advanced number understanding that starts to intersect with spatial understanding, such as with algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
DEVELOPING SPATIAL SKILLS: Spatial skills includes geometry and an understanding of space and distance. Developing spatial skills includes understanding geometric figures, angles, measurement, distances and such. But it also includes weird things that you normally think of as part of science - rockets, kites, balloons, bubbles, and marble runs - and things that you may associate with building & construction - building blocks, patterns, skeletons of dinosaurs, . All of these help kids learn about things "in space" and in three dimensions. And, SPATIAL ACTIVITIES MAKE MATH FUN!
INTERSECTION OF SKILLS & ADDING COMPLEXITY: Research has shown that there is a relationship in older students between spatial skills and math achievement. That research is intuitively obvious because advanced math intersects between number skills and spatial skills. Your child's spatial skills need to be as sharp as number skills when this intersection occurs. We love to look for and provide products that intersect these skills - number workbooks that include graphing, for example. Bright children love to have added layers of complexity in their activities - it's just more interesting AND FUN than doing straight worksheets.
ENJOY OUR PRODUCTS!: We think we are offering a great set of math products for bright kids - helping them be successful as they progress with math in school and enjoying it along the way!
