Everyone knows what a screw looks like! Screws can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes and are used in all machines and constructions, performing different tasks. What many people don't know is that a screw is basically an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder!
 
This kit explores the many forms of a screw that are important with physics and mechanics. SCREWS are far more interesting, and far more important than you might realize! They are more than just an alternative to a nail. Come, enter the fascinating world of SCREWS from a physics mechanical science perspective, with projects such as these:
 
Make a revolving crane and learn about the concept of gear drives. Turn the crank and revolve the crane to pick up loads from any position around the crane. Discover how loads can be raised safely by using a simulation of the rachet mechanism.
 
Construct a model of a crane that uses a worm gear to raise the loading arm from horizontal position to vertical. Learn how worm drives can reduce speed and increase force.
 
To fix materials on tables so that you can glue or cut, usually a vice is used. You can build a fully functional vice and learn how this interesting device is using the screw mechanism to help us apply huge forces with a minimum effort.
 
Build a folding platform, which uses the worm as a screw, similarly with the vice model. It converts rotational motion to linear and pushes or pulls the scissor-type linkages to raise or lower the platform.
 
A 36-page activity book is included with innovative experiments and detailed explanations of the different technological principles applied.
