A NOTE FROM LAURI:
Non-competitive game similar to Pandemic. This is considered a "cooperative" game, not a competitive game. The most well-known cooperative game is Pandemic. Both Pandemic and FORBIDDEN ISLAND were designed by Matt Leacock. However, where Pandemic includes plagues, FORBIDDEN ISLAND is packaged in a more "Pandemic-lite" way. Although the players are grave-robbers, there is less negativity. Success with the game requires cooperative play.
Well designed family game. First of all, the artwork is very well done. Secondly, game play is interesting and fun. Each player takes on a role and starts at different positions on the island. The island is magically trapped to sink into the ocean if anyone takes the treasures, so players have to work together to get the treasure and be airlifted off the island. All cards in a player's hand are face-up, which allows for easier planning of actions. Obtaining the treasures is not easy because as players collect the cards that will lead to treasure they need to balance making sure that when they turn in their cards they don't sink into the abyss. Players go through the deck of cards multiple times (instead of dying when the deck runs out in Pandemic). This is a fun game with charm, and well deserving of the Mensa Select Award!
