| "GEOMETRIC SHAPES" Activity Book Description:
Geometric shapes are a fundamental building block in our understanding of mathematics. Kids learn basic shapes at a very early age. However, some simple shapes have many different types. For example, triangles come in all sorts of shape and sizes. Learning about geometric shapes that are beyond the basic shapes helps develop a stronger understanding of geometry!
The GEOMETRIC SHAPES ACTIVITY BOOK contains blackline drawings of 24 different geometric shapes for use in the home or the classroom. Very young children can simply color the designs. While not directly studying the geometry content, they will be thinking about the math on some level. The figures will expose them to a variety of different shapes and help them see the role of math in the world around them.
For older children, there are five additional activities for each design that help them learn about geometric shapes, symmetry, math, and art.

About the Author DR. ROBERT FATHAUER:
A tessellation designer and artist, Dr. Robert Fathauer received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Electrical Engineering and has been on the research staff of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has been a longterm fan of M. C. Escher, and began designing his own tessellations in the late 1980's. Dr. Fathauer's explorations with tessellations branched into fractals.
Dr. Fathauer's is interested in tessellations, fractals, mirrors, illusion, and perception. He produces puzzles, math books, and math manipulatives based on his designs, and to promote mathematical art.
A NOTE FROM LAURI:
Provides an organized way to learn the next level of geometric shapes for kids. The geometric shapes included in the book are triangles (equilateral, isosceles, right, isosceles right, scalene), quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, convex quadrilateral, concave quadrilateral), regular polygons (pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, dodecagon), circle, ellipse, and star polygons (pentagram, hexagram, octagram).
Interesting activities with each geometric shape. For each geometric shape, kids can color the shape, draw the shape with a connect-the-dot activity, write the name of the shape, color a tessellation example, mark the rotational and mirror symmetries of the shape, measure the shape, and compute either area or perimeter.
Reproducible for classroom usage for long term benefit. The author gives permission for copies of the worksheets for classrooms, great for long term benefit. |
