A NOTE FROM LAURI:
Great tactile and visual-spatial combination. This game literally gives kids a feel for geometry and area. I love to give kids the opportunity to visualize and build a 3D structure from a 2D picture. This is particularly unique because it has height, where builders recreate the structure up from the table, rather than flat on the table.
This version has more challenge and encourages creative thinking. There are several versions of MAKE 'N BREAK, and I like this version the best because of the additional EXTREME cards. These cards include:
- Number cards. Cards have a number, which represents the number of building blocks to choose and to build a structure of your choice. Since only two building blocks can touch the table the builder is challenged while also encouraged to think in a creative way.
- Red hand cards. Cards display colorless building blocks and a red hand. The builder must choose the correct building blocks without the color cue, and must build a structure of their choice using only one hand! The other hand must be under the table or behind their back.
- Arrow cards. These cards have the number 4 and a red arrow. The builder chooses 4 building blocks, and then passes them to the player on their left, and that player must build the structure in order for both players to earn their points. I love the teamwork involved with these cards!
Great game for multiple ages of players. This game is very inclusive of different ages. Younger players can always play with the longest time limit. You can remove the EXTREME cards while playing with younger children. It's a great game for families and groups of multi-aged kids.
Suggested by gifted teachers. This game was first suggested to me by gifted teachers at a gifted conference. I already carry some single-player games where 3D structures are built from 2D pictures, and this is a fun multi-player version of the same concept. A multi-player version allows for social and teamwork skills, and provides a structured way for several people to take turns to build. |
