The mechanics for assembly are straight forward. The first several steps are focused on assembling the gears and shafts into the two gear boxes and screwing the gear boxes together, which becomes the "body" of the robot.
The next steps are to attach the solar panel with motor, and to attach the "head" and the "body" of the robot. Double sided tape is used to attach the solar panel to the base of the crab's head and to secure the motor into a motor bracket. Then the motor bracket is screwed into the gear box assembly, thereby attaching the "head" to the "body" of the robot.
Attaching the legs is perhaps the most challenging part of the assembly. Each of the eight legs includes three parts, which are assembled and attached to the body with tap screws.
The final step is to place the transparent head cover on the robot with cover locks, and attach the antennas.

Requiring only a screwdriver, the kit contains visual step-by-step instructions.
Your child will quickly learn that the crab operates with full energy outside in sunny weather. Inside, using 100w halogen bulbs, the crab works but takes time to energize.
Encourage your young scientist to use the crab to experiment with solar energy. Have them try the crab on cloudy days, shady locations, indirect sunlight, or under a fluorescent light. Sadly, they will learn that these do not produce the light energy required for the crab to work.
A very fun science fair experiment for active kids!
This crab is an original idea for a behavior or contest award at home, in school, in classrooms, at clubs, or in boy scouts.

A NOTE FROM LAURI:
Next kit to try after SUPER SOLAR RACING CAR. Although this kit is advertised by OWI as appropriate for first time experimenters with little or no experience, I would recommend trying the SUPER SOLAR RACING CAR first, particularly with younger kids. The WALKING KING CRAB is appropriate as a first time project for kids that follow instructions well and have solid fine motor skills. Otherwise, WALKING KING CRAB is the next logical step after SUPER SOLAR RACER, and an excellent second project! |
