| "WIND POWER 2.0" Electric Generating Turbines Kit Description:
Build Wind Turbines to Generate Electricity!
With WIND POWER 2.0 by Thames and Kosmos, you will build two different models of working wind turbine to harness power out of thin air. Use the wind to energize your electric vehicles by harnessing the wind's energy in your rechargeable AA batteries (not included).
Wind is one of the most promising sources of clean, renewable energy available today. Wind energy has been used for centuries to pump water and crush grain in windmills, and is now increasingly being used to generate electricity to power our modern world.
Discover how the sun makes the wind, providing us with an endless source of energy. Read about different types of wind turbines and windmills.
Assemble each of the wind turbine models in turn. One is based on modern electricity generating design with three long blades. The other design has shorter blades, and you can use two, three, four or six blades on this model. There are also three gear ratio options. Use all of these variables to test which turbine design works better in different levels of wind. You can use your turbines outside, or use an indoor fan to create comparable tests of each turbine.
In addition to experiments on the efficiency of various turbine designs, you can also USE the energy you collect! Use any turbine design and wind source to charge up rechargeable batteries. Then build one of 6 vehicle models to run with your newly charged batteries. Vehicles include a glider, sail car, tricycle, jet car, tractor, and race car.
Gather some additional items for some more advanced "tests" of your new wind turbine systems. With an anemometer, a digital multi-meter, tachometer, angle meters and two ammeters, you have the tools to do the Advanced Reference project: Analysis of Fan Blade Angle vs Power Generation Capacity. Indoor fans (either "household" or "industrial" or both) will make for easily comparable results, though the tests can also be done outside with the wind nature provides.
The 133 building pieces included in this set are compatible with those in all Thames & Kosmos Construction Series kits, Physics Series kits, Wind Power, and Hydropower kits.
This is a great science fair project idea!
