What is a tessellation? A tessellation uses a figure or shape over and over on a flat surface (a "plane") without overlaps and without gaps. Often, but not always, tessellations are made with four colors. In fact there is something called a "four color theorem" that states how four colors can be used in a tessellation without the same color touching. An artist by the name of M. C. Escher is famous for his tessellation art.
Playing with geometric shapes helps develop spatial skills. I LOVE having younger kids play with geometric shapes as a way of developing spatial skills and getting comfortable with geometric shapes early. We currently carry three MANIA shape products, all with different geometric shapes (based on pentagons, triangles, and shapes made from four small squares). They are all great for kids to use!
